Ashok Leyland Brings Back TAURUS and HIPPO as Demand Rises in Mining, Infra Segments

Ashok Leyland on Wednesday announced the reintroduction of its iconic heavy-duty truck brands TAURUS and HIPPO, reviving two nameplates that have been deeply entrenched in India’s commercial vehicle ecosystem for decades.

Positioned for mining, infrastructure, and construction applications, TAURUS has been reintroduced as part of Ashok Leyland’s high-horsepower tipper portfolio, while HIPPO returns as a key offering in the tractor segment. The company said the relaunch reflects growing demand for robust, high-performance MHCVs operating in extreme terrain and load conditions.

The trucks were unveiled by Shenu Agarwal, Managing Director & CEO, Ashok Leyland, in the presence of senior leadership, customers, dealers, and media representatives.

Built on Ashok Leyland’s AVTR modular truck platform, the new TAURUS and HIPPO range offers multiple configurations and feature options. According to the company, the trucks deliver higher productivity, improved uptime, superior fuel efficiency, and enhanced driver comfort, enabling better lifecycle economics for fleet operators. Bookings and deliveries have commenced across Ashok Leyland dealerships nationwide.

Commenting on the launch, Agarwal said, “TAURUS and HIPPO are purpose-built for heavy-duty requirements of mining, infrastructure, and construction applications. The new truck range is powered by Ashok Leyland’s A-Series 6-cylinder engines, now with industry-leading peak torque and power, delivering unmatched durability and reliability, higher productivity and faster turnaround times.”
