Senator Rubio proposes bill to strengthen U.S.-India ties and penalize Pakistan

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio has introduced new legislation aimed at deepening defense cooperation between the United States and India. The bill, known as the “United States-India Defense Cooperation Act of 2024,” seeks to enhance military ties and technology transfer between the two countries in response to perceived threats to India’s security.

The proposed act calls for the U.S. Secretary of State to closely monitor and report any instances where Pakistan uses offensive force against India, provides safe havens to terrorist groups, or supports militants in Jammu and Kashmir. Rubio’s bill emphasizes treating India as a key ally in defense matters and speeding up the delivery of defense equipment to the country.

Rubio, a prominent Republican from Florida who previously considered running as Donald Trump’s vice-presidential candidate, argues that strengthening the U.S.-India partnership is crucial given the current security challenges facing India. The legislation aims to solidify defense relations and hold Pakistan accountable for actions that undermine regional stability.
