World No. 1 Jannik Sinner withdraws from Paris Olympics due to illness

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has been forced to withdraw from the Paris Olympics just days before his men’s tennis campaign was set to begin.

In a heartfelt message on Twitter/X, Sinner revealed he has contracted tonsillitis and will be unable to compete for his first Olympic medal. The 22-year-old expressed deep disappointment at missing out on the chance to represent Italy at the Games for the first time.

Sinner wrote, “I am saddened to inform you that unfortunately I will not be able to participate in the Paris Olympic Games. After a good week of clay training, I started to feel unwell. A visit to the doctor revealed tonsillitis, and I have been strongly advised not to play.”

He added, “Missing the Games is a huge disappointment as it was one of my main goals for this season. I couldn’t wait to have the honor of representing my country in this very important event. Good luck to all the Italian athletes who I will support from home. Forza Italia.”

This marks the second time in recent weeks that illness has impacted Sinner’s performance. During his Wimbledon quarter-final match against Daniil Medvedev, he experienced dizziness and had to leave the court for a medical check, which affected his play. Despite returning and battling through a five-set match, he was eventually defeated by Medvedev.

Sinner’s withdrawal is a significant loss for the tennis competition at the Paris Olympics, where he was expected to be a top contender.
