Tensions flare at Paris Olympics during Israel-Mali soccer match

The football match between Israel and Mali at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday ended in a 1-1 draw but drew significant attention for reasons beyond the game.

Heightened security surrounded the event due to ongoing geopolitical tensions over the war in Gaza. The Israeli team, which has been targeted by threats reminiscent of the 1972 Munich Olympics attack, arrived at Parc des Princes under heavy police escort. Outside the stadium, security was tight with armed officers stationed at various points.

The atmosphere inside the stadium was charged. The Israeli national anthem was met with loud jeers, while Mali’s anthem was received with enthusiastic support from their fans. The large Malian diaspora in France showed strong backing for their team, and the stadium’s mood shifted significantly when Mali equalized with a powerful header from Cheickna Doumbia after Israel had initially taken the lead.

In the days leading up to the Olympics, a disturbing video circulated online featuring a masked figure making violent threats and warning of potential attacks in Paris. Although Hamas has denied involvement, the video and other threats have intensified security measures for Israeli athletes.
