Tencent Launches Virtual Experience of Newest World Heritage Site with Gametech

Tencent has unveiled “Microcosm,” a virtual experience that brings Beijing’s Central Axis to life online. This launch coincides with the recent addition of the Central Axis to the World Heritage List by UNESCO.

Microcosm is accessible via the Digital Central Axis Weixin Mini Program, offering a detailed 3D virtual tour of this historic landmark. Users can explore the Central Axis, guided by avatars, and view areas and scenes that may be damaged or no longer exist. The project provides an immersive look at the site’s history, reflecting Chinese imperial design and urban planning from the 13th century.

The Mini Program also supports the Digital Watchman project, a crowdsourced conservation initiative. Locals and visitors can scan QR codes, take photos, and upload reports to help monitor and maintain the site. This initiative aims to involve the public in the conservation of the Central Axis, which includes 15 heritage landmarks like the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven.

Zhan Shu, Head of Tencent’s Digital Culture Lab, highlighted the project’s role in preserving cultural heritage. “Through our digital capabilities and gametech, we are exploring creative ways to bring cultural heritage to life in the digital era,” he said.

Microcosm, which took three years to develop, uses advanced technologies like high-definition scanning and AI. The virtual space covers 200 square kilometers and includes detailed models of plants, buildings, hills, and water features. The project has already attracted over 4.5 million visits and 800,000 registered users.

Tencent’s Digital Central Axis Project showcases the potential of technology in cultural conservation. The company’s efforts in this area reflect its broader mission to use technology for good, enriching lives through innovative digital experiences.
