KPIT Group Firm Technica Engineering Opens SOME/IP to Accelerate Software-Defined Vehicles

Technica Engineering, a KPIT Group company, has announced the opening of the SOME/IP communication standard to the global automotive ecosystem, making the specification freely available for use across Automotive Ethernet–based vehicle architectures.

Originally developed by BMW, SOME/IP is one of the most widely deployed middleware protocols for in-vehicle Ethernet communication, supporting secure data exchange across vehicle systems and external services.

The decision to open the specification aims to support innovation at scale by enabling OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, developers and academic institutions to co-develop and deploy software-defined vehicle features more efficiently.

Dr. Lars Völker, Technical Fellow, Head of Media Relations of Technica Engineering, said, “Publishing SOME/IP as an open specification is a milestone for our industry. It removes long-standing barriers, ensures transparency, and provides a solid and accessible foundation for modern automotive architectures. By enabling open-source development, we will dramatically accelerate development cycles, improve interoperability across platforms, and unlock faster, more collaborative innovation for the software-defined vehicle.”
